New ‘surprising events’ planned for Sugar Mas 47

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts –- Plans have been announced to enlarge St. Kitts and Nevis Sugar Mas 47 to include the usual popular events, such as beauty pageants and calypso shows and add activities that cater to all groups in society have been announced by Chairman of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee Noah Mills.

“Fringe activities make up a very important part of Carnival because there are different demographics, different psychographics and different behavioural attributes that define a population,” Mills explained, noting that persons may attend activities depending on their age.

“Carnival has to be a balance of these activities, in which a majority of the younger generation, who want to go to the Wet Fete, would also want to go to the Powder Fete and Flag Fete and other fetes like the Cooler Fete and Inception,” Mills said. “These events are growing and we welcome them.

“Events such as Inception and Cooler Fete are just two of the usual events that will take place for this year’s Carnival. Also coming back are the Flag and Wet Fetes. Joining the festivities last year was the Glow Parade.”

Mills said participants will see some surprises and new events during this season. Some new and innovative fetes will also be introduced to the list of the usual carnival activities.

“For example, I heard that there is one called the silent fete, Mills explained. “When I saw that first I wondered what in the world could be a silent fete. Apparently it’s a concept where 1,000 headphones will be provided to party-goers, who wear the headphones, listen to DJs and you dance. When someone feels like talking, they take off the headphones and talk. I heard it’s hot in Antigua and other parts of the Caribbean and it’s going to be introduced here.’

Mills said the Haynes Smith Caribbean Talented Teen is also slated on the calendar of activities. Last year, he said there was a hiatus from Party Central on Bank Street and noted there is “a new entity taking over that line of entertainment, which will run for about three weeks, because after the shows, people like to go somewhere to hang out, that is scheduled to go on Bank Street.”
