Notting Hill will soon have a new stylish ‘home from home’. The Laslett, in Pembridge Gardens, is named after Rhaune Laslett. It was ‘Miss Las’ who in 1966 had the inspiration and energy to create a community festival for the area, thereby unwittingly lighting the fuse that exploded so gloriously into Notting Hill Carnival.

The celebration known as Carnival has no singular description. In Trinidad and Tobago, it's celebrated before Ash Wednesday, sometimes with participants rubbing down their bodies with mud and paint.
