Motto apologises to Dominicans for wrong Bouyon claim

St Lucian artist and producer Lashley ‘Motto’ Winter is apologising to the people of Dominica for a statement he made while performing at the World Creole Music Festival on Sunday night.

While performing on the last night of the Dominica World Creole Music Festival, Motto said Bouyon music started in St Lucia.

The claim had many Dominicans taking to social media to lambaste the artiste.

Motto said in a statement that he regrets the slip of tongue.

“I did not mean to say that. I meant to say it started in Dominica. That was a slip of tongue. I was caught up in the adrenaline of the performance,” he said.

Motto, who has carved a reputation for making sounds such as Dennery Segment and Zouk popular in soca music, said he would never disrespect the people of Dominica in that way.

“I respect the people of Dominica and I love Bouyon music. I called for love and unity among artists and producers in Dominica on stage because I want to see the music progress and become global. Famalay, produced by Dominican producer Dada, is just the start,” he said.

Motto said he is forever humbled by the opportunity afforded him to make his debut at the World Creole Music Festival that saw the likes of Afrobeats star Davido and Jamaican superstar Buju Banton perform over the three days.

Motto performed his hit songs 'One Woman', 'Jamish Feeling',  'Party Lit' and 'Get in your Position'. For his recent song 'Big Ride', he had Dominican singer Ezra join him on stage. He is featured on the song as well.

Motto said he is hopeful Dominicans forgive his error and pledges to work hard to ensure the world knows the rightful origins of Bouyon music.
