Your only destination to all things CARNIVAL
The July/August vacation is here. Known as summer in temperate countries, this is the time of year when people are travelling and looking for fun events to attend. In the Caribbean and the diaspora, this is the time of year when there is a slew of Carnivals from St Vincent to New York but in the region, there is so much more happening in addition to Carnival. So if Carnival is not really your cup of tea, here are seven major non-Carnival events you don’t want to miss.
1: St. Kitts Music Festival: June 27 to July 1
This annual event will feature the likes of Soca songstress Destra Garcia, Kes the Band, Wayne Wonder, Sizzla Kalonji, Patti Labelle and Lauryn Hill.
2: Reggae Sumfest: July 15-22, Montego Bay, Jamaica
Jamaica’s premier reggae festival is a week of parties and performances from some of the top names in reggae and dancehall. Damian Jr Gog Marley, Aidonia, Bounty Killa, Spice, Stonebwoy from Ghana, Capleton, Cham and Maxi Priest are all among the star-studded lineup. The week also includes a conference examining the state of the reggae industry.
3: Dream Weekend: August 2-6- Negril, Jamaica
Now in its tenth year, Dream Weekend is the place to be if you want five days of pure vibes, energy and partying. From an all-white affair and wet and wild party complete with water slides to a Dream concert and J’ouvert.
4: CPL T20: August 8 to September 15
This annual T20 cricket tournament will see six regional teams take on each other in cricket venues across the Caribbean.
5: Tobago Heritage Festival: July to August 1
An event created to preserve Tobago’s cultural traditions, the Tobago Heritage Festival takes place across the island with villages engaging in historical re-enactments, harvests and storytelling among other things. The biggest draw is the Ole Time Wedding in the village of Moriah.
6: Martinique International Salsa Festival: August 14 to 20
Top salsa dancers from around the world will convene in the French island of Martinique for a week of dancing and workshops.
7: Trinidad and Tobago Great Race: August 18
Celebrating 50 years in 2018, the Great Race is an event hosted by the Powerboats Association of Trinidad and Tobago. The top powerboats in the country will race from Trinidad to Tobago in an exciting and competitive event.
