Your only destination to all things CARNIVAL
World renowned Trinidadian soca superstar, Machel Montano, is currently in Belize to fulfill a promise he made to students at Stann Creek Ecumenical to perform at their prom but also, to begin work on establishing a musical program at the institution.
Montano arrived in the country earlier this week, and news of his arrival quickly spread. It was even erroneously reported on a nightly television newscasted that a parent had booked the soca star to perform as a student’s prom entrance.
The singer explained via a post on Instagram that he had visited the country last year to perform at the annual Soca & Jazz festival but had spent a few days before the performance getting to know the country. He recounted a tour he was taken on to the Stann Creek Ecumenical High School and how impressed he was at the young talented Garifuna drummers he heard.
Montano promised the students he would be back the following year to perform for their prom. That performance will take place on May 31st in a free concert for all students.
Montano also revealed that he is working with the school’s principal, Jeremy Cayetano, and staff to discuss the development of a music program centered aroundproviding students the opportunity to learn about their Garifuna music and culture, and empowering the next generation of Belizean artistes.
“I will continue my work with the school to realize our collective vision, and we will have more things to announce further down the road as things develop” Montano added.
