Your only destination to all things CARNIVAL
‘Famalay’ was the hottest Caribbean collaboration of 2019. Bunji Garlin, Machel Montano and St. Vincent’s Skinny Fabulous did the most last carnival in T&T, energetically persuading fetters and masqueraders alike, that their collab was the monster of all soca tracks, eventually taking home the coveted Road March title. One season later, Garlin’s wife is challenging the new precedence, having teamed up with fellow Viking, Jaiga and Grenada’s Lil Natty and Thunda on a track called, ‘One Love.’
Jaiga spoke with Ebuzztt on the nature of the new single, saying the track was actually ready in time for 2019’s season, but the decision was made to hold back. “Famalay was already out there and we made the conscious choice to keep the song for 2020,” said the ‘Action’ singer.
Jaiga’s been working hard behind the Soca scenes, having established the ‘Great is the Artform’ brand and amping up his Great 8 digital deliverable. He’s a firm believer in Soca and argues that not many people on the circuit are truly invested in building the industry and developing the sound of the genre. He questions the motives of many artistes, highlighting that for many, it remains a hustle.
The new single features a very powerful introduction by former Road March, Groovy and Power Soca Monarch champion, Fay Ann Lyons. Much like her 2015 blockbuster single, ‘Raze’, Lyons’ untraditional yet incredibly powerful and sometimes pore-raising soca effect, lashes hard on this new single. Couple that with the raw, hardcore renditions delivered by Natty and Thunda, and added to Jaiga’s Soca dynamic, and you’ve got something pretty great!
Lyons-Alvarez has been pretty quiet in recent weeks. Her usually expressive Instagram presence has seemingly been traded in for motivational quotes – at least for the moment. With Carnival 2020 dates – February 24th and 25th, in plain sight, Soca artistes are presently in creative mode, whipping up those monster anthems that’ll get us all through another magical Carnival season.
