Artistes from around the world can vie for a chance to be crowned the International Bashment Soca Monarch on July 6, and to walk away with the Bds$125,000 grand prize.
4D Entertainment, the producers of the Yello Bashment Soca Monarch competition, has announced that this year’s competition will be open to artistes from across the globe.
The competition is in its third year in Barbados, but this would be the first year it will be open to artistes outside of the island, after Stiffyclaimed the Bashment Soca crown for the past two years. This year’s purse is also more than double last year’s top prize of $50,000.
Despite its share of controversy, the competition, which has criticized for the quality of its lyrical content and over its sound which many say resembles that of dancehall, has been credited with reviving and injecting freshness to the growing culture and musical landscape of Barbados.
Bashment soca is a fusion of different genres of music, distinguished by its tempo and not limited to a beat. In St Lucia, it is known as Dennery Segment, while in Grenada it is called Jab Jab.
This year, 24 songs will be chosen for the semifinals and there will be a public voting component. However, a panel of judges will decide on the 12 finalists.
Interested persons are asked to upload their songs to www.intlbashmentsoca.com. (PR)
